Resize Image to 20 KB

Get a photo, scan or signature under 20 KB with the best quality that fits. The file is checked byte by byte before you download it.

Leave width and height empty to let the tool choose. Fill in one of them to keep the proportions; fill in both for an exact size.

What fits in 20 KB?

20 KB is 20,000 bytes (or 20,480 if a KB means 1,024), which is 160,000 bits. Spread across a picture, that is only a fraction of a bit for every pixel of a large photo, but several bits per pixel for a small one. The table shows the arithmetic:

Bits per pixel available at 20,000 bytes
Pixel sizePixelsBits per pixel at 20,000 bytes
200 × 23046,0003.48
300 × 400120,0001.33
600 × 800480,0000.33
1200 × 16001,920,0000.08
3000 × 400012,000,0000.01

The fewer bits each pixel gets, the harder the compression has to work and the more visible its blocks and smudges become. That’s why the tool trims the pixel dimensions before it pushes the quality very low: a smaller, clean picture usually reads better than a large, blocky one. It measures your real photo rather than guessing, because a plain passport-style photo compresses far better than a busy outdoor scene.

Getting a good result at 20 KB

  • Crop first. Every pixel of empty wall or sky costs bytes. If you only need a face or a signature, crop to it (or give exact pixel dimensions and let the tool crop).
  • Use a plain background. Smooth areas compress very well; noisy backgrounds such as patterned curtains eat the budget.
  • Start from the original. A photo that has already been compressed several times carries old compression noise, which is expensive to store again.
  • Signatures: the signature resizer whitens the paper and trims empty margins, which makes a 20 KB (or even 10 KB) file look much crisper.

Under 20 KB vs between 10 and 20 KB

“Maximum 20 KB” means any size up to the limit is fine. Some forms also set a minimum. Use the 10–20 KB preset for those; the tool then aims just under 20 KB and confirms the file is above 10 KB. If your photo is too simple to reach the minimum at its current size, see increase image size in KB.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize an image to 20 KB?

Choose the image above; the tool is already set to a 20 KB maximum. It finds the highest JPG quality and the largest pixel size that fit, then lets you download the file. The exact size in bytes is shown before you download.

Why does my 20 KB photo look smaller on screen?

20 KB is a small budget. For a detailed photo the tool usually has to reduce the width and height to keep the picture clear, instead of squeezing a large picture into blocky compression. If your form needs particular pixel dimensions, enter them under More options.

My form says the file must be between 10 KB and 20 KB. Can this do it?

Yes. Tap the 10–20 KB preset (or type 10 in the minimum box). The result is checked against both limits before you can download it.

Can I keep a PNG under 20 KB?

Only by making it much smaller in pixels, because PNG can't reduce quality. For photos and signatures, JPG reaches 20 KB at a far larger size. Choose PNG only if the form insists on it.

Is 20 KB the same as 20,000 bytes?

Sometimes. It is 20,000 bytes if the form counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and 20,480 bytes if it counts 1,024. The default setting keeps your file at or below 20,000 bytes, so it passes either way.
